About this course:
Even though there are many search engines, for most of us searching for something online means using Google. Its usage seems rather simple. You just type in what you are looking for and in less than a second, you are presented with pages and pages of search results. However, that's a very basic way of going about it. There is more to Google than meets the eye. Under its hood, Google has got features that can make our searches more focused and our result pages less cluttered, thus helping us find exactly what we are looking for.
This course is going to teach you how to use Google and many other search engines, in ways that you could not have imagined. You will learn how to find hidden files and classified information, and how to use tools that most people have never heard of. More than that, you are going to learn how to do online research, how to access databases and archives to dig up obscure sources of information.
However, this course won’t just show you how to use Boolean logic or advanced search operators and url parameters. More importantly, it will teach you how to think, in order to unearth all kinds of information. It will give you, not just the tools, but also the skills and knowledge you need to do advanced academic research, including medical research. And it contains chapters on how to search online newspaper archives (extremely useful for historians and genealogists) and on using library databases and finding statistical data.
Last but not least, it will teach you how to find your way out when your research is stuck at a dead end.
